Golf

Golf is a sport in which a the player hits a golf ball with clubs that are called woods or irons towards and into a hole just slightly bigger than the ball in a little amount of shots as possible.  It is played over 18 or 9 holes depending on the course being played and unlike most sports does not have a specific playing area although it can have boundaries.

Golf is generally played as stroke play which means the amount of shots a player has taken.  Each hole they play represents a certain amount of shot.  If they are playing a Par 4 hole and finish the hole in 4 shots they will be even par.  If the player finishes in 3 shots then the will be 1 under par and one over if they finish in 5.



Today golf is played all over the world and there are 2 major tours that take place, The PGA tour that’s based in the U.S and the European Tour that is based all across Europe and a portion of the Middle East.  Competition winnings are very high and golfers can earn millions for winning just one event.  Events usually take place over 4 days with the players going round the respective course four times.  Like Tennis there are four Major Championship Events each year on the golf calendar. The Masters which take place every year at Augusta in the state of Georgia in America. The US Open which is played at several different courses around the US.  The British Open played at a number of venues around the British Isles and the PGA Championship which is also played in America.

Currently Tiger Woods from the US is the No1 golfer in the world and has amassed an amazing 13 Major titles in his short career.  Jack Nicklaus is the all time leading Major winner with 18 championships.
